My friend Saul had caught a crazy eye condition that can leave you with blind spots and nerve damage on your face. We asked if he would come and film a surf to get him out of the house. We threw some snow goggles on him hoping we wouldn't catch it. No one could handle it so we banished him to his bike.

In this clip I'm riding a 5'10 levitator (aka rocket if you knew about it in the early stages). I've been riding these one and two inches down from my old standard short board of 5'11. I think it would work really well down to four inches shorter. The 5'10 x 18.5 in this model has quickly become my standard board.

This is a quick clip of Josh and I surfing a few days together at home. Its only a tease of Josh's surfing. You'll be seeing more of Josh and Brendo in our movies in the future.

Lately I've been surfing a bit with the Hay brothers, Josh and Brendan. They live just down the road from me at copacabana. Josh is 16 and Brendo is 14. Josh surfs natural and Brendo surfs goofy.

This is Josh flicking his tail high for the ladies of copacabana.

You and your brother are turning into fine young surfers, you've both been competing a bit lately. How have you been going in the comps? What has been your favourite comp to compete in?

B: Josh and I go ok in in comps, we both won a cadet cup at Freshwater Beach. Josh goes better in comps than I do but I think I like free surfing a bit more. There's no pressure and you can do what you want.

J: Yeah Brendo and I have been going well this year, it's always tough. my favourite comp that I have done would have to have been a comp when we stayed at Jarrad's house because Brendo and I both won, ha ha! it was the harboard community bank pro. Um yeah I love competing, just being able to go out there and have a heat with your mates, it's fun.

Have you ever beaten josh in any competitions?

B: Nah I cant say I have, we haven't really surfed against each other that many times.

Did you want to stay riding for the same company as your older brother so you could stay together for comps and things like that? Or it didn't bother you changing sponsors?(Josh and Brendo were both riding for O'neil before Brendo recently made the move to Billabong)

B: Um it kinda bothered me with not staying together and stuff but I didn’t really mind . It's cool having different sponsors.

J: Yeah I didn't really mind aye, I was sort of glad it happened in a way but yeah I didn't really care to be honest. I rather do my own thing, he is too annoying at home.

Jarred (Howse) has been coming to the comps with you, has he made a difference in your results?

J: Yes he has, Jarred is a massive help when it comes to comp strategies. He teaches you so much in and out of the water, it's cool to have him as a coach and a friend. He has definitely made a difference with my surfing and my personality too, it's great.

You're both from Copacabana, Matty Wilko country. Do you surf with him often? Who else inspires you to surf in your area?

B: Yes we surf with him a fair bit when he's home and it's pretty fun hanging out with him. Also Browny (Dan Brown rips, local guy from copacabana, he charges hard too), Ace and that Mooney guy inspires me as well because they all charge and shred.

J: Yeah we do sometimes when he is home, we usually surf and get shot by Woody (Jacob Wooden, apprentice of Jack McCoy) it's heaps fun makes you wanna surf better every time. Ace inspires me a lot, Micro, and that Andrew Mooney guy, hahahah.

Where do you surf, mostly at home?

J: I surf Copa point a fair bit and Avoca. Also surf spot X … Josh cracks up (spot X is what I refer to as the overcrowded Box Head).

Josh at 16 shows maturity and strength in his surfing. He has a great attitude towards surfing which I think will take him far. Sliding around a short few minute walk from his house, should say a short nagging phone call to mum for a lift up or down the hill.

There is a huge rivalry between the MOB (which is my boardriders) and Avoca Boardriders (which I have competed in and surfed for in the past).
If your dad lives at Macmasters Beach, how come you compete for Avoca Boardriders and not the MOB?

J: Haha well, I did do the MOB a while ago when I used to do nippers, then did both, then just did Avoca, not too sure why. I guess my trainer Mick Power, did boardriders at Avoca so I decided to stick with him, he knows what he is talking about as a coach and is also a nice guy. Yeah that would probably be why.

B: That’s a tough question! Haha, I competed in Avoca Boardriders before I started [competing in] the MOB so when they made that shit rule I went with who I started with, but the MOB guys are so chilled out and mellow, it's sick.

When I was your age if the tele was on it was pretty much because a surf movie was playing. Do you have any movies you watch religiously or is there any surfer you watch to learn from?

B: Yeah whenever the TV is on it's always a surf movie on. There is heaps of surf vids I love watching, like Modern Collective, Still Filthy and Craig Andos' section in One Month on the Moon, but also Moondog in that as well, haha.

J: Ummm well yeah it's really the same here, if Brendo and I aren't surfing, we are watching surf movies and eating and hanging out, waiting for the next session. We just watch everyone pretty much. Pretty much whatever movie is out we watch till we get over it.

I know your surfing in small waves is coming along at a great pace but I was wondering if you have any plans to get some big barrels at places like the zone and Crackneck? Are you keen to start surfing these spots?

B: For sure, I’m keen to start surfing those spots when I get a bit older! Them waves are so crazy and powerful.

J: Yeah I've been out there a couple of times just to know what its like, but yeah I'll definitely stop being a pussy and have a go soon, you'll have to take me out there again and call me on some bombs!!!

What did you think when you got out there and saw it up close?

J: Yeah it was a bit scary, like when you said its only like 3 foot when we were at the car park, we get down there and its like 6 foot.

If your mum was going to let you have any girl sleep over for the night, who would it be? Which of your mum's favourite dinners would you request for that night?

J: I'm not sure ayyy, it would probably have to be Miranda Kerr, because she is hot and it would be funny as. I'd want her to try one of mum's baked dinners.

B: The girl who I would want to sleep over would have to be Megan Fox! The dinner would be a baked dinner. PERFECT!

Josh, you used to have beautiful blonde hair, then you shaved it off, do you find it harder to get chicks now and have you found it tough to find a date for your formal?

J: Yeah it's growing back, i didn't really have a problem with chicks! Haha I've actually had a date lined up for the formal since year 8 or something.

Whats she look like?

J: Yeah she is good looking, she is actually going out with one of my best mates, sorry man!

Haha pretty tough for both of you. You won't be getting any that night and he'll just be wondering if you are!! Haha

So your out of the water at the moment and had a pretty tough trot lately with niggling injuries, tell us a bit about what's been going on?

J: Yeah I cut my head open in the gromfest and I couldn't surf for a week, then I hurt my ankle after state and I was out for 2 weeks, then after that I found out that I had to get my appendix cut out so thats why I'm out for a month. I just started getting sick all the time and didn't really feel right then I woke up one morning with crazy pains in my stomach and went to the hospital and had to get an operation pretty much straight away.

Have you guys set any goals for your surfing, or are you just enjoying it and seeing where it takes you?

B: We both definitely want to make the tour and all that but at the moment just having fun and seeing where it takes us.

We picked blueberries all day Sunday, but on the way home I saw that the weather was clearing and there were actually some glassy little peaks here and there along the coast. Maria filmed me with the Flip cam while I rode the beachbreak for a while before sliding over to try the rocky top of the point. The tide was high and there was some backwash warple, but I had it all to myself, so it was plenty of fun.

I rode an inflateable Fourth Gear Flyer surfmat made by Paul Gross (fourthgearflyer.com/). This was a Fatty model, for those of you who are familiar with the 4GF lineup.

The Flip cam sure is handy, but since the surf is rather distant, I had to scale up some of the shots -- from 200 to even 300 percent -- in order to crop in to the subject. When you view it fullscreen, it looks best.

This is part of myself and Marti Paradisis' quiver we took to the secret island. This was a few years back... (obviously before switching to globe shoes). I took a 5'11, 6'0, 6'4(far right) and a 6'6 that isn't pictured. I was collecting a few photo's for Bill ( Cilia ) for a new site he's starting up (where you can follow what's been happening with him and I on any new shapes we've been working on and where they've been getting tested out. Also see what new crafts Bill's imagination can whip up) and I stumbled across this photo and a few others. I realised the 6'4 and 6'6 Im riding are the very first one's in that length that he'd made me... Some four years ago and I'm still riding the same ones now... Kinda strange in this day and age. Ive taken them all through indo, WA, tassie and everywhere in between. Still got them in the back shed and if there's waves that need a board in that range, I'll be on the same ones yet again.

Ours is a heavy wave, check how big the explosions are from the lip in each photo.
Its nice when you see it draining in front of you. A good indicator of things to come.

Mark Mathews. Good guy and charges as hard as anyone. Have you ever seen his wave at cyclops? If you've been there before you would understand. When he says if he fell going off that step he'd die, Im with him.

James Kinnaird had a month off from his usual job filming the rippy crew. So we decided to get away from home and find some waves. We went to Indo, to WA, to a hoax Tassie swell, back to Indo then home for the last week… A month of travel in all, and some ok footage which made us think… ‘What the fuck do we do with this?’… Nobody will buy it?… The only other option was to get a few clips on a covermount and be forgotten in a week when the next one comes out? We thought ‘lets see if we can make something interesting and hopefully be remembered for two weeks’… There’s a bunch of acting to tell a story which involves rocket ships, far away planets, mythical waves and giant birds, plus a bit of surfing that chimes in with the story… So if you hate acting and shit acting at that, you will hate this...We wrote and shot the whole movie (which is based around a secret RCJ lets me in on) before we had even spoke to Ross and thank the lords he agreed otherwise everything we shot would have been useless. We told Brad Gerlach that Ross was in on it and his acting had already been shot and he reluctantly agreed. He was soon was followed by Laurie Towner, Ace Buchan, Hoyo, Dom Wills and even master shaper Bill Cilia.” AM

Still pretty windy so we took a chance and left pumping waves at home, this was the first wave we saw when we turned up.... Yeeeeeeow. Puss in was first to surf. He got one of the bigger ones on his second tow and the wave let him know all about it...

Lunch, guitar hero then we were back out there... Picked up a bit and the tide had dropped out so we hit another wave we knew of. So much fun but was riddled with wind as its fairly exposed, my eyeballs are red raw, doesn't look too bad in these photos but was horrendous riding the ski or just sitting there for that matter... Still, nobody out so was pretty fun...

Just got home from Taiwan and got the call Pedra was looking the goods for the next afternoon. Packed Two boards for the trip, 5'7 tow Board and a 6'1 weighted shortboard for towing slabs and paddle surfing. I packed a tow vest, hood, booties and some 10ft legropes.

Brook 'choock' Phillips and James 'Jim' Holmercross picked me up from the airport and we headed straight for the mother ship.

Some towns in tassie are full of these old little houses. they're awesome.

Chook flying off the top on one of his own creations. He's been shaping his own boards for 3 or 4 years now and by the looks of this pic they aren't going too badly. Sadly we didn't get to surf Pedra Branca which was the initial aim of this trip sue to the delay with the ski and the wind turning bad for the next morning. It definitely wasn't all bad though when we rocked up to this set up. 4-5ft right handers that peel down a point and offer you a playful wall made for any kind of surfing and some long clean barrels. Really we scored!

This wave was so fun and forgiving. Would be quite satisfied surfing here everyday.

I love this photo. Marti grinding the coping in front of the gum tree's.

You can see where the tree line dips and you can spot a mountain far away. This is where the river comes out that makes the bank. If you get caught inside you can just take the travelator (the rip) back out which runs along the rocks.

Taiwan blew me away. There are so many awesome set ups and so few people around to surf them. Here is the right hand reef/beachbreak that is across the street from where we stayed. Perth sits here and takes it all in.

Fu Dog. This was our residence for the week. That room up the top you can see is where Shieldsy and Perth Standlick stayed. Corey and Myself had a room opposite theirs. Really nice inside. Its Run by two guys, an aussie, Neil Armstrong who affectionately gets the name of Moonwalker and another guy Sammy from the states. They Both live there full time and do so mostly for the uncrowded waves. You can hire Boards from here and get surfing lessons and I think they have plans to make it more of a shop too.

Ziemsy! ha The kid is always red, this particular day he was extra sunburnt, almost blistering on his nose. I had to get a photo.

There are so many nooks and cranny's with waves here. This is just one of many we scoped out and ended up surfing. This is the big lined up left hand beach break when it got bigger. Moonwalkers Lady in the foreground. She was out there surfing every day.

This wave was so much fun. Bowl style left which allows you to do a few turns and on the sneaky ones a nice barrel, there was no one out and we never saw anyone surf it apart from us while we were there. It was tucked away just around the corner from the right near our place. This day we were there Shieldsy attempted to shoot while standing up on a SUP. Pretty hilarious watching him give it a go. He got a few waves on it at the end and resulted in a great little session. Photo: Andrew Shield

This set up has the potential to be world class. The first time we surfed it was maybe a little too big but when it got smaller we could see how the waves hit the reef properly. Not many turns going on out here, mostly barrels over shallow reef that kind of bend towards the shore and slingshot you through. While we surfed this wave, jet ski's with banana boats would cruise past with groups of Taiwanese kids screaming. All with swimming caps and full suites and wouldn't be going faster than 8 knots! hilarious.

INDO....Somewhere On The Old Spice Trail

Most trips start the same way. Land at an airport and pack the car. Met up here with Anthony Walsh and Mark Visser packed the car and did the overnight drive. I think it took us roughly 9 hours!

We arrives at this small village in the pic around 7am. We stayed here for most of the trip, sleeping on the floor of the villages orphanage, with only board bags and towels for sleeping with......

This shot is taken pretty much directly behind me from the last photo above. One of the best set ups we surfed is straight out the front here. Pretty serious wave when it has some size.... Two big heavy barrel sections over shallow seriously sharp reef. Wearing some nice scars now to prove it. Lance and Jimmy, master and apprentice.

We were here during their ramadan, this is a time when Muslims fast for most of the day i think it is. Made it impossible to get a feed. I think some don't even swallow saliva they take it that seriously.

Great, great guy we kinda highjacked for the trip. behind him you can see the local boys preparing a fire and a makeshift apparatus to cook the tuna with.

Some of the best Fish I've eaten. Straight over the fire and eaten out of a banana leaf on a secluded beach with a A-frame left and right out the front...... NO!

El Salvador Amigo!

Shorty Looks on from the carpark of the Punta Roca restaurant which Jimmy's dad Bob owns.

Well Shorty and I have finally made it down to El Salvador after two years of wanting to visit Jimmy 'The King' Rotherham (as we've branded him) after I first met him a few years back. He's talked his home country up in all areas, waves, women, food and, and, what more do you want? He's ticked all the boxes with flying colours. Jimmy's Dad owns and runs a restaurant at the end of Punta Roca (long perfect right point) which pumps out some incredible food. Huevos Rancheros, mucho bueno!!! Jimmy himself owns a hotel called the Punta Roca some ten minutes from here in front of another rippable right hand point and a fun beachie. The hotel is awesome, nice and relaxed with a few big pools and an awesome restaurant and air con in the rooms. We are living the dream!!! F**K YEAH!!

Jimmy looking out from the top of the restaurant, This is La Paz, the end section of the point. The points runs out a lot further, I'd say well over a kilometre. If you make it in this far you might as well grab a something to eat to power you for the run back out.

View from the brekkie table. The Point is lined with black boulders and if you want to surf during the day its pretty much a must to carry a palm branch with you so every ten or 15 metres you jump on it to save the skin on your feet from melting off. We've been surfing three times a day. Pretty easy to see why, you can only watch this for so long and not paddle out.

I was quite nervous about getting the results back and as I thought, they pretty much just told me I don't look after my body. Quite interesting and made me think.....

This is Puss In and Rondog dualing it out in ping pong. This is the room between ours and Puss Ins place, the common room between. The Ping Pong room, No mans land, switzerland, the room that is never cleaned because no one takes ownership of it, Call it what you like. This room is where many courageous and long battles have been fought a place where many Mc Donalds meals have been won or lost, a place where many arguments have erupted and many bats and balls bitten and snapped with the furious frustration that comes with a loss. This room can be a magical or deadly place. Puss and Rondog I'll meet you in switzerland!!!

squinty. Nobody wears leggies here. te theory is you snap less boards, its so heavy your board usually gets spat out the back alongside yourself anyway. You do swim in a bit so you get fit pretty quickly, well kinda. Its hard not to drink beers everyday while your having a siesta in the pool when the daily onshore arises.

Just recently I had the opportunity to be a character in Kram's new film clip alongside Hoyo, Garett Parkes and Craig 'Nando's' Anderson. The clip is for a cover Kram did of The Ramones' Blitzkreig Bop. It was an awesome day. Most of the day I got to drive a pretty mean valiant around, got to meet and hang out with Kram and the gorgeous girl who's starring in the clip and also had a good amount of beers to top the day off!

Coaster Fest '08'

THE LAZYS LIVE SHOW. If you have experienced this there is no doubt you would have been blown away and understand what I'm trying to relay. Jacko's mini ramp(TASSIE)

I recently went to tassie and got skunked on a swell, well mostly the winds that came with the swell. We chased our tails for three days and exhausted every possible solution to getting a half decent wave or something productive out of the trip. We covered half of the state searching and even hired some lights to shoot a small beach break one night which worked horribly. Fed up and needing to shake off the 'no wave blues' we bought a few cases of beer, hit Jacko's mini ramp and got a little crazy. The skating moved on and into marty's place and then we rolled into town for an unforgettable night. Here are a few photo's which I will update soon.

Shark V Gorilla

I've been staying in Byron Bay with Ellis Ericson for the past week. Almost every morning before we went paddling we'd watch the news over breakfast. Every day there was coverage on a new shark attack or one that'd recently taken place. This rattled us but made us think, after much discussion we came up with the question, are surfers the most hard core enthusiasts?

What other sporting arena would stay busy everyday if there were dangerous animals living in it and the only way to use it was to play along beside them? let's just say you were playing cricket in the park and crocodiles would launch out of the grass and try and eat you or say at your local bowling alley between balls popping out you had to dodge a huge python which would attempt to grab your arm and try and drag you in. It'd be like being at the skate park and having to avoid the few bears that lived on it or same as cruising down the street where there'd be a gorilla hidden in a bush or shop front and every now and then he would jump out onto the unsuspecting skater. This all sounds so crazy but it's not a far cry from the situation a surfer puts themselves into everyday. If this was the case I wonder would other sports be near as popular as surfing is? I know, I know, of course your far more likely to have heart failure or die on your way to the beach in your car. The point I'm trying to get across is that immediately after the shark attacks there were people surfing on only the hint of a wave that existed and this to me was in no way unusual. It wasn't your adrenalin loving chargers either, it was old men and women and young kids looking to get their surfing fix. To me this shows just how much we surfers love our sport and also shows just how great it is! So the questions still stand, would other sports be as popular as ours in the same predicament? Is it the best sport there is?

SECRET ISLAND!!!!

Not too far back, can't say exactly when. Marti Par a, Stu Gibson and Myself went to an Island where there are epic waves and the only people there who liked to ride them were us..... We lived on white rice and beans for the majority of the time and some days fish, when we caught them. It was an awesome adventure and were some of the best times and best waves of my life! To see more photo's of this incredible trip buy Australia's Surfing Life magazine in the upcoming months. The story will be taken from my daily journal I took while there.

Last Year I was lucky enough that I was asked by Waves Magazine to go on a trip with them to India. Yes, India! I jumped at the chance, Knowing I wasn't going to get to India any time soon on my own accord.
I was accompanied by Wade Goodall(check out this new trick Wade's doing... Its off the f***in show, nameless ), Laurie Towner(Laurie paddle in at shippies) Roghan McKerlie( editer of waves mag) and the sexy Andrew Christie came along to capture it all. We went at possibly the worst time of year for swell and did hardly any surfing. The Tourism board of India paid for our flights and put us up in 5 star hotels wherever we went, each with our own room's. Curries were eaten for every meal. Seriously breakfast, lunch and dinner. We stayed on luxury house boats, let off fireworks, did some site seeing and basically, ran a muck for 10 days. Here's a few photo's which sum up a bit of our time in India....

Shipsterns Bluff, September '08'.

Of course they do! As you may or may not know the Oakley Surfing Life and billabong XXL big wave awards are in full swing. I'm proud to say I have an entry in both and Lucky enough for me I'm a finalist in the Oakley Surfing Life big wave awards. Also one of the other six finalist's is my good mate Marty Paradisis. The winner will be announced thursday the 19th of february in Bondi. What this means is not only the fact I have a chance at some serious coin but..... Oakley are going to organise the finalists a means of getting there, a comfortable bed to sleep in, free food and free alcohol. Sounds like the ingredients for an awesome party if you ask me!

Why big waves you ask?

Its simple. Where I've grown up (Macmasters beach) there has always been a huge presence for riding big wave's. That's what you did if the swell was there, if you surfed you surfed everyday, small or big. We may not get the swell's of the west coast but it does get big enough now and then to dust off your 7'10 and big enough to get your heart racing and get the big wave thrill. Big wave's are what I was taught and learnt are the most special part of surfing. Big swells are rare and give you a joy and feelings small waves can't. Once you've tried, you'll never let a big swell go unsurfed again. There's nothing like the anticipation of waiting for a large swell. We're always looking for them and you know if you've been there before, your going to be in for some seriously exciting times. During a swell always, there are moments of glory and of course what would they be without situations of unescapable trouble which, could be to the enjoyment of your mate's or, to their sheer terror. Which both I think is very exciting. I personally keep going back because there is something about harnessing the raw energy of the ocean, right under your feet. Then using this incredible power to roll down the huge water hills in such a manner that you get this feeling that cannot be explained with words but only by doing it yourself could you fully understand. There are a million more reasons why which I cant explain. This mean's you'll have to get out there and figure them out for yourself........ Good Luck. explode!

I think the paddle guys are still 'the shit' when it comes to big wave surfing, doing it the original way. It takes much more guts and determination and I think you gain more satisfaction from it. That's why my favourite entries are from Grant 'Twiggy' Baker in the Monster Paddle section from Mavericks. My good friend JDB aka Timberwolf (as known in the cat clan), lives in sweden most of the year with his beautiful girl Marie. He has a beard year round and had gotta be one of the best blokes I've ever met. He was the inspiration for my current and first(ginger) beard. Thanks JDB!!!

Luke Wardell (Chuck Norris due to massive lip, Alfred .E Newman from front of mad magazine, cabbage patch kid and is also the biggest nemesis of the cat clan) is retarded when it comes to art or drawing. So when he decided to give his board a new spray it was the worst we'd seen. At first it looked like a pair of Ronald McDonalds pants. So he got to work with his black texta and turned it into the macca's menu with all his favourites on there. Go lukey, we love McDonalds!!!

Every year without fail, things seem to get get pretty wierd while on THE ROCK... Between swells there can be three day long massive onshore swells (for the most part un-surfable or not worth the trouble), torrential rain and the endless ground hog days seem to drive the mind crazy! Only so many trips to Foodland and re runs on cable can take place before your mind starts to wonder and explore areas it hasn't before. Spencer Hornby and I were trapped in the quik house and Spence thought it would be a great Idea to cure his hangover with a few beers. I felt like a hot tea, as you do on those rainy days. Soon the idea arose! We questioned whether the left over vodka would go nicely with a hot tea......?

Directions For Vodtea :

1) One and a half shots of vodka into a mug. Leave tea bag in vodka to soak for 1 minute.

2) Add hot water(amount to your liking).

3)stir and add sugar/honey depending on how sweet you are.

4) Drink at your own risk!!! bahhh haa. try it, if you can get past the fumes!

Although there is a sneaky little left just in front of our place at sunset for those wild stormy days. Beware though it is hard work and the rip will take you faster than the time it takes for your brain to realise Vodtea's are no good! Nirvana Surfboards Laguna Beach - Shop Opening

During my trip to South Cal, Nirvana Surfboards opened up their flagship shop in Laguna Beach. It's got Billy 'The Falcon' Cilia's newest craft's, Nirvana Surfboards apparel, boards that show the evolution of Nirvana's design through the 70's/80's/and 90's, and some pretty sweet surf art.

Black Knight - 2nd annual

The 2nd annual Waves Black Knight awards have recently kicked off with some bloody awesome surfers on it. They are good bunch of guys who can do it all. I think its going to be hard to pick and will be very interesting to see how things pan out.

Little did you know that the idea for this concept was hatched by myself and Dean Brady(more from Dean really) while doing a boat trip in new guinea. We pitched it to waves and they jumped at it. Funnily enough I won it and Brade dog got 2nd! Whats the time? you know.
